Isn't Kanab In the Middle of Nowhere?

When we envisioned Dark Sky, we knew we wanted a location that offered more than just a place to park an RV, but we certainly never could have thought of a more perfect location than Kanab. Nestled in southern Utah, this small town offers everything we were looking for in a location to create a unique, unforgettable RV experience.

The funny thing is, Kanab really chose us! We were full-timing at the time and decided to link up with my parents, Rick and Meryl (also owners), to celebrate my Dad's 60th birthday. They planned to meet us in their RV at Dinosaur National Park and from there we headed to Bryce Canyon and eventually, the North Rim. We were on our way to the Jacob Lake Inn and as we were passing through Kanab the back door of our 37' fifth wheel swung open (as it had on occasion), right in front of Glaziers grocery store. It was like the door of opportunity swung open!

A few days later we drove back into Kanab to have lunch, learned more about this special little town... and we were sold! Long story short, we found the most perfect 40 acres just three miles east of town, then went back to our towns in Texas, sold our homes, sold 90% of everything we owned and purchased the land and began the dream of Dark Sky.

But why this special town of Kanab?

One of Kanab’s biggest draws is its proximity to some of the most famous national parks and outdoor destinations in the United States. You're a short drive away from Zion National Park (~45 min), Bryce Canyon (1.5 hrs), the Grand Canyon North Rim (1.5 hours), and Lake Powell (1 hour). For those looking to explore unique destinations, Kanab is the perfect base for exploring hidden gems while still feeling remote. Destinations like Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, Buckskin Gulch, the Wave, epic hikes to see dinosaur tracks, hidden waterfalls, sand caves and petroglyphs (plus so many more!!) are all must-visit spots for adventurers who enjoy going off the beaten path. Whether guests are into hiking, off-roading, or simply soaking in the vast desert landscape, Kanab’s location provides endless opportunities for exploration.

Beyond its access to these natural wonders, Kanab itself offers a peaceful and secluded atmosphere that is hard to find in more urban areas. With a population of just over 5,000, the town maintains a quiet charm. For our guests seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of city life, the calm and tranquility here is invaluable. The seclusion of Kanab, combined with the starry night skies (thanks to the minimal light pollution), makes it an ideal destination for RV travelers looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.

Safety was also a top consideration for us. Kanab is known for its low crime rates and friendly community, offering a sense of security to visitors and residents alike. This peace of mind allows our guests to fully relax and enjoy their time at the campground without worrying about the common safety concerns that can come with more populated tourist areas.

Ultimately, we chose Kanab (or Kanab chose us!) for Dark Sky because it strikes a perfect balance: easy access to the outdoors, a safe and secluded environment, and a welcoming small-town feel. Whether you're visiting for a night or staying for an extended trip, we believe Kanab and Dark Sky offer an experience like no other, blending the magic of southern Utah’s landscapes with the comforts of home.
